iPhone OS backed by most mobile developers

IT Industry - Strategy

81% of mobile developers are coding (or plan to code) for the iPhone, more than for any other platform.

Analyst firm Ovum says iPhone OS is the favourite smartphone among developers, with 81% of the 217 developers surveyed by the company saying they are coding or plan to code for Apple's mobile platform.

BlackBerry OS is supported by 74% of developers, with Windows Phone OS on 66%. Android is nipping at Windows' heels with 64%, with Symbian trailing on 56%.

Given that iPhone is far from being the smartphone leader (Symbian is way ahead in terms of shipments and installed base, though all those iPod touches should also be taken into consideration), why is it so popular among developers?

Ovum notes the iPhone's high profile, and the three billion plus apps that have been downloaded from the App Store. "The commercial case for developing on iPhone is therefore largely proven," observed Ovum officials.

The fact that the development tools are available free of charge can't hurt, either. And - quibbles about apps being rejected notwithstanding - Apple has made it very easy for developers to monetise their efforts through the App Store.
