HP clarifies e-waste export policies

IT Industry - Strategy

Hewlett-Packard has extended its corporate policy on the export of non-working electronic devices to help reduce the chance of improper disposal.

HP has a longstanding policy forbidding the export of hazardous or regulated e-waste to developing countries, but has extended its self-imposed rules to prohibit the use of intermediaries as a way of working around this requirement.

"E-waste processed by HP and its authorised vendors is tracked and documented throughout the entire chain of custody until final disposition," said HP officials.

The company defines e-waste as non-working parts or devices, excluding materials defined as non-hazardous under the Basel Convention, and components being returned to an OEM under warranty.
