Construction needs cloud flexibility

Australia’s embattled construction sector could benefit from cloud based information systems that can be switched on and off in lockstep with individual projects – with the exception of those organisations based in remote areas like the Kimberleys.

Google plans ultra-fast residential fibre broadband experiment

IT Industry - Strategy

A few communities around the US will get 1Gbps fibre to the home (FTTH) Internet service as part of an experiment planned by Google.

As a followup to its experimental Wi-Fi network in Mountain View, Google is proposing to build fibre networks in a small number of locations around the US.

Dubbed Google Fiber for Communities, the fibre networks will deliver speeds of 1Gbps to participating homes at a "competitive" price.

1Gbps is fast enough to download a full-length high-definition movie in less than five minutes, Google officials explained.

Google's motivation is a desire to provide a testbed for applications that can take advantage of such speeds, and to experiment with ways of actually building and operating fibre networks.

Like Australia's NBN, Google proposes an open access regime for its fibre network, giving users a choice of service providers.
