NEC celebrates million port DSL sales to Telstra

IT Industry - Strategy

NEC Australia says it has delivered one million DSL ports to Telstra since commencing volume supply in July 2004. The NEC DSLAM product enables ADSL2+ services to be provided when required through remote activation.

NEC Australia began development work on ADSL in 1993 at the company's global R&D centre in Melbourne and its products were used in Telstra's first ADSL trials. These however did not lead to a commercial service and when Telstra finally launched commercial DSL services, it chose Alcatel as its DSLAM supplier. NEC was selected as the supplier of its second generation DSLAMs in 2003.

NEC says it now has 163 software and hardware engineers dedicated to access products development at its broadband R&D Centre in Melbourne.

NEC Australia has recently secured major broadband technology deployments to Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Russia, Singapore, Malaysia and Turkey. The company says that a large percentage of broadband technology deployed to Japan is based on platforms developed by NEC Australia.

NEC also announced that there are now half a million subscribers to PCCW's world 'now Broadband' TV service in Hong Kong, claimed to be the first and largest commercial video-over-DSL deployment in the world and based on NEC equipment.

NEC says it and PCCW collaborated closely to deliver a complete Pay TV experience over broadband, "allowing customers to enjoy DVD quality movies at the same time as accessing interactive online features at high speeds, using the same connection. The design, claimed to be years ahead of its time, will also incorporate HDTV.
