NBN Co moves into network acquisition mode

The NBN Co has kicked off the process for acquiring the equipment needed to rollout its FTTH network with a request for capability statements from potential suppliers, confirming that it intends to rollout a GPON network.


NBN Co took out advertisements in Australian daily newspapers on Saturday 5 December  saying it was seeking "a variety of capability statements so we can fairly select the right partners."

Specifically, initially NBN Co wants capability statements from "experienced suppliers of FTTP and related active equipment to support the deployment of a point-to-point and gigabit passive optical (GPON) network.

The request for capability statements will be available on its web site from 5pm Monday 7 December. Responses are due by 21 December 2009.  The company not presently said how it will proceed from capability statements to tenders (ie whether it will conduct an open tender process or whether organisations will be invited to bid based on NBN Co's assessment of their capabilities.

(The NBN Co website is billed as temporary. The company promises to launch its new web site on 10 January.)
