Telstra unveils multiple Asian initiatives

Telstra International has unveiled what it says is a series of initiatives that will "deepen its connectivity in key Asian growth markets in Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia and Indonesia."

The announcement follow Telstra confirming on 27 November that it was formalising its presence in India with what is believed to be an application for national and international long distance telco licences and the recent expansion of its reach into Africa through a partnership with South Africa's Internet Solutions.

In this latest announcement, Telstra International says it has formed a partnership with Viettel, one of Vietnam's largest full-service telecommunications providers, and has set up IP VPN PoPs in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. It says these will enable multinational customers "to access a highly reliable network, and have direct connectivity to branch offices in Vietnam and Cambodia... [and] allows Telstra International to offer customers traditional private line and Ethernet private line services in both countries."

It has also installed new PoPs in Indonesia and Malaysia that will enable it to provide traditional private line and ethernet private line services to customers and has expanded its dual-PoP connectivity to seven countries in Asia, a move that it says will "add to the inherent resiliency and diversity of [Telstra's global MPLS network."

 For customers, it says the enhanced redundancy options mean improved quality and support for real-time services, and that network services are highly available with options for proactive network management and advanced business continuity plans.

Telstra International has also expanded its IP VPN footprint into Malaysia and the Middle East through a partnership with Telekom Malaysia, the largest telecommunications company in Malaysia.

Drew Kelton, managing director, Telstra International, said: "Moving from 2009 to 2010, we will continue to see evidence of the growing demand for data connectivity in growth markets in Asia, and these new PoPs will ensure that our international clients can access the standard of connectivity required to support their own business expansion strategies now and in the coming years."
