Motorola aims to dominate enterprise wireless market - UPDATED

IT Industry - Strategy

Motorola Enterprise Mobility Solutions business has introduced into Australia a set of recently released enterprise wireless products - 802.11n and external long distance point-to-point and point-to-multipoint systems - declaring its intent to be number one or two in a local market its says is worth in excess of $120 million a year.

The product set represents the integration of technology from a series of Motorola acquisitions in recent years: Symbol Technologies, Mesh Networks, AirDefense; Othogon Systems and Wireless Valley.

"Motorola has followed a carefully-planned acquisition and investment strategy during the past few years to build-up a portfolio of complementary wireless solutions that covers the depth and breadth of both indoor and outdoor wireless applications," said Roy Wittert, Australia and New Zealand manager for Wireless Networks Solutions in Motorola Enterprise Mobility Solutions.

John Fogarasi, sales director Asia Pacific for Motorola Wireless Network Solutions said: "Symbol Technologies was the leader in wireless mobility. Wireless Valley brought network planning tools, including simulations. AirDefense is a military grade wireless security solution. With it we can identify over 300 types of intrusion and protect against them. It is also a very good tool for troubleshooting. Orthogon Systems brought point-to-point solutions, up to 150 miles and Mesh Networks with outdoor meshes is strong in the municipal WiFi market."

According to Fogarasi, "Prior to July 1 we had these wireless technologies embedded in different marketing groups, and wireless broadband product were embedded in our government team. We have now brought all these technologies into one business unit under a single vice president and now the Wireless Network Solutions organisation is taking all those products to market through various [vertical market] Motorola sales teams and our own direct sales team."

Fogarasi claimed that Motorola Enterprise Mobility Solutions, would make the Fortune 500 if it were a separate entity. "You would have an $US8 billion company with 22,000 employees, if it was a separate company it would rank 315 in the Fortune 500." (The original version of this article incorretly iidentified the Wireless Network Solutions division of Enterprise Mobility Solutions as the 'Fortune 500' company).
