The Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) has completed a business continuity and disaster recovery project linking its offsite operations centre with its Sydney CBD headquarters using a high-speed optical network from Nortel.
The link provides access to a secure backup facility which is able to take over if the main trading system is disrupted for any reason. The two sites communicate with each other over a Nortel optical network.
The ASX began upgrading its core Nortel network with new equipment towards the end of 2004. The first part of the upgrade was the deployment of four Nortel ethernet routing switch (ERS) 8600s, two at the core site and two at the back up facility. At this stage links between the two sites were provided using carriers' VPN services.
The sites have now been linked through a Nortel Optical Metro 5200 system, and split multilink trunking functionality on the ERS 8600 will be used to eliminate single points of failure on the network and allow multiple active connections to the network core. Work on the project was completed in November and the network has now gone live.
