Microsoft to Family Guy: never mind

IT Industry - Strategy

After getting a look at the kind of jokes that would be in the Family Guy/Windows 7 special, Microsoft has decided to back out of its sole sponsorship deal. Fox still plans to air the show and is looking for a replacement sponsor.

Just two weeks ago, Microsoft and Fox announced "Family Guy Presents: Seth & Alex's Almost Live Comedy Show," which was set to air November 8 without commercial interruption.

Microsoft was to sponsor the show, and Windows 7-related content would be worked into the program in lieu of ads.

But according to Variety , Microsoft executives had second thoughts after attending the show's taping on October 16.

The Windows 7 content was there, but so were jokes about "dead people, the Holocaust, feminine hygiene, and incest," says the Hollywood news source.

The inclusion of such inappropriate material comes as no surprise to anyone familiar with Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane's work.

Microsoft apparently felt that such jokes would not reflect well on the company's brand and, after attempting some negotiations over content, finally decided to spend its money elsewhere.

The show is still on the schedule for November 8.
