Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
The Australian Interactive Multimedia Industry Association (AIMIA) has created what it says is Australia's first video industry group "in response to the burgeoning industry opportunities and challenges represented by digital video."
The Group's charter is to act as a unifying voice for the Australian digital video industry. It has been charged initially with developing national standards for business models, business practice, cross platform rights and 3G/mobile Internet and video measurement.
The founding members include BBC.com, BigPond, Firelight, ninemsn, Viocorp, Vodafone Hutchison Australia and Yahoo!7. The Group is chaired by Adam Furness, head of video sales, ninemsn. The Group has a number of current projects underway: a consumer survey on interactive video consumption; measurement of interactive video; best practice in video; a glossary of terms and definitions.
"This is an important step forward for the digital industry in Australia," said John Butterworth, CEO of AIMIA. "Digital video consumption is growing exponentially and this offers a huge growth opportunity for many Australian businesses. At the same time, this opportunity also throws up unique challenges, so the time for a unified set of local standards and copyrights across multiple video platforms has never been better."
Toby Hack, multichannel and digital broadcasting sales director for Nine Network Australia, said, "National standards are vital for ensuring consistency across the industry and each country needs to have its own set of content rights and standards in relation to video. In Australia this means everyone moving forward with the same guidelines to enable the sector to accelerate faster.
