Telstra adds one million mobile services, but Sensis plummets

IT industry veteran Vamos joins Telstra board

Steve Vamos, a former senior executive at several big-name IT companies is one of two new members of the Telstra board. The other is Russell Higgins.

Steve Vamos's experience includes 14 years in senior management positions at IBM Australia, but he came to public attention as the head of Apple Australia.

Vamos was subsequently appointed CEO of ninemsn, the joint venture between Microsoft Australia and PBL, and then in 2003 became managing director of Microsoft Australia.

In 2007, he moved to the US to become Microsoft's online business head of worldwide sales and international operations.

"Steve has an exceptional knowledge of the challenges and opportunities of the Australian market, enhanced by his experience as a global executive at Microsoft," said Telstra chairman Catherine Livingstone.

"Telstra has built an impressive and growing stable of online media assets and I believe Steve’s Internet and technology expertise will be of great benefit to the Board and the company," she added.

The other new board member is Russell Higgins.
