Opera Software has released what it says is the final version of Opera 10, claiming it "stands out from the crowd with innovative new features wrapped in an elegant, fresh interface."
Opera Software highlights three key innovations as being
- Opera Turbo, "a new compression technology that solves the pain of slow connections." Users can enable Turbo if they are using a slow connection such as WiFi, to "browse the Web at broadband-like speeds," and it will automatically cut in when it detects network speeds such that it can improve download speeds. Opera Software claims that, in its laboratory trials, Turbo gave up to eight times faster Web surfing over slow connections than other browsers.
- Better tabs. In Opera 10, the tab bar can be resized by pulling down on it or double-clicking the handle to reveal full thumbnails of all open tabs.
Other enhancements include: super-sized Speed Dial; automatic updates; a spell checker for use in forms and email that supports 51 languages, using the popular open source Hunspell dictionary format; an improved e-mail client.
Also, Opera Software says it has fine-tuned overall speed, making Opera faster and smoother on resource-intensive pages such as Gmail. It claims that Opera 10 is 40 percent faster in page loading than Opera 9.6, even without Turbo activated. Opera 10 incorporates "adaptive memory management ". Opera Software says it is "optimised to work with your machine, conserving memory if your computer has less RAM and utilising more memory to enhance performance if your computer has memory to spare."
Opera Software has also released a new set of on-board, Web-development tools, Opera Dragonfly, available in 36 languages.
Opera 10 is free, available in 43 languages, and runs on Windows, Mac and Linux platforms. It can be downloaded from http://www.opera.com /. There is also a video guide available A video guide to Opera 10 is available.
