The U.S. Department of Justice has given its okay to Oracle's acquisition of Sun Microsystems, first announced last April.
Business software giant (and "
great white shark of the IT industry ") Oracle first announced its plan to pay US$7.4 billion for computer systems manufacturer Sun Microsystems.
Various regulatory agencies, as well as Sun stockholders, had to approve before the purchase could go through.
Sun's stockholders approved the deal on July 16, and now the Justice Department has given the nod and ended the legally required waiting period.
The primary remaining hurdle would appear to be the consent of the European Commission.
Soon after the deal was announced, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison
said he planned to retain Sun's hardware business so that Oracle could provide optimized hardware/software systems à la Apple and Cisco.
On the other hand, analysts
predicted that up to 15,000 Sun employees could lose their jobs in the process.
