The world's largest mobile handset manufacturer is set to announce an alliance with the world's largest software company.
Stephen Elop, president of Microsoft's Business Division, and Kai Oistamo, executive vice president for Nokia Devices, will announce the alliance at a teleconference to be held at 1.00 am Australian Eastern Standard Time on 13 August.
No other details have been given. The Microsoft Business Division is the arm of the company responsible for Microsoft Office.
The news comes in the wake of reports that Nokia might be preparing to ditch the Symbian operating system. The Financial Times quoted a source close to Nokia saying “Symbian is much too cumbersome to keep up with modern operating systems. We have to react.” The FT suggested Nokia might be preparing to switch to Maemo Linux.
