Telstra keeps tabs on mobile customers with Openwave

IT Industry - Strategy

Telstra has installed software from Openwave Systems to enable it to monitor all aspects of mobile subscribers' data activity from a variety of sources, including on portal and open Internet browsing, mobile email messaging, video and audio streaming, device type, demographics and location.

According to Openwave, its product, Openwave Mobile Analytics, "provides Telstra a dashboard view of intelligent analytics and rich reporting capabilities across its mobile device portfolio, including smartphones and feature phones, iPhone traffic, netbooks and other mobile-capable devices...[and] insight into the operational aspects of [its] mobile broadband network, allowing [Telstra] to control network operations more efficiently by optimising present capacity and managing ongoing bandwidth demands."

Ross Fielding, executive director, Telstra Product Management, said: "Mobile Analytics is able to aggregate usage data and generate meaningful reports in a timely manner which means we have a far better understanding of what our customer base as a whole is using and what they are after."

According to John Giere, senior vice president, products and marketing at Openwave. "Openwave Mobile Analytics provides operators like Telstra with the customer intelligence management platform they need to improve their understanding of mobile data usage, view mobile traffic patterns and make adjustments accordingly to optimise their network assets, deliver targeted content to users and monetise relevant services.

"Through interactive and customisable reporting with intuitive drill-down capabilities, Mobile Analytics helps operators identify and proactively manage bandwidth allocation as well as make business critical decisions based on subscriber behaviours and usage patterns and trends."

Telstra is already using another Openwave product, the Integra mobile Internet service management software to help manage its mobile Internet access services. According to Openwave, "Integra's lightweight service intermediation is designed to support multiple protocols, including increasingly http-based traffic. Integra supports advanced protocols quickly and without the need for costly and time-consuming integration."
