The Government has offered Australia's three mobile operators, and vividwireless, renewal of their existing spectrum allocated on 15 year licences in the late 90s and early 2000s at set prices, while the Government expects to rake in $3 billion.
Telstra Product Management, Executive Director, Ross Fielding, said Telstra worked with Research In Motion (RIM) to develop a software upgrade that boosted the device’s coverage performance.
“We are really pleased to be able to boost the handheld coverage performance of this device. The BlackBerry Bold is everything customers love about the BlackBerry email experience super-charged by the speeds, extensive national 3G coverage and unique services available over Telstra’s Next G network,” Mr Fielding said.
Telstra offers the Bold for free on $80 Business Phone Plan, which includes $80 worth of calls per month, but this compares unfavourably to 3 which offers the Bold for free on its $59 cap, which includes $350 worth of calls and texts per month. Optus offer the phone on its $79 cap with $300 worth of included calls and texts, and Vodafone offer the phone on their $50 Business cap, which includes 150 minutes to any mobile and 200 standard texts per month.
The iPhone 3GS is one of the Bold's main competititors and is the highest selling phone in its category.
The 16GB model is available for $0 on Telstra's $100 plan, with $90 worth of included calls and texts. Again, other carriers offer better value for money, with 3 offering the phone for free on its $79 cap with $650 worth of included calls and texts per month.
Optus' plan is worth considering, as it offers the 16GB model for $0 on its $79 cap with $610 worth of calls and texts, or the 32GB model for $0 on its $99 Timeless cap, which includes unlimited calls and texts. The plans are not easy to compare and can be confusing to look at, but healthy competition between telcos can only be a good thing.
Telstra customers that already have a Blackberry Bold can download the update as follows:
Existing BlackBerry Individual Server (BIS) customers can upgrade the software on their device by connecting it to their PC, launching their BlackBerry Desktop Manager (version 4.6 or higher) and downloading the update from www.telstra.com/blackberry/software . The download from BlackBerry is around 100MB. BIS customers can contact Telstra on 132200 for technical support.
Existing BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) customers should contact their corporate IT administrator.
