IT Industry - Strategy

The Tasmanian communities of Smithton, Scottsdale and Midway Point will be the first to receive optical fibre broadband connections in the rollout of the National Broadband Network in Tasmania.

The Government said that the network would " deliver wholesale-only, open access broadband network services in the second quarter of 2010," and that almost 5000 premises in the five towns would have access to the NBN's FTTP network. To support the rollout, backbone fibre links would be built between Port Latta and Smithton, between Cambridge and Midway Point and on to Triabunna and from George Town to St Helens via Scottsdale.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, made the announcement at the opening of the Aurora Energy and National Broadband Network data centre, billed as a key piece of infrastructure that will support the National Broadband Network in Tasmania.

The government also announced Doug Campbell as chairman of Tasmanian NBN Co , a joint venture between Aurora Energy, the Tasmanian Government's strategic telecommunications partner, and the National Broadband Network company and named Mike Quigley as executive chairman of NBN Co.
