NEC's Nextep offers "unlimited" 3G connectivity for private networks

IT Industry - Strategy

Neatnica explained that the service had been designed to replicate, wirelessly, the level of security available to users accessing a corporate network from the office LAN, and as such would be sold with a dedicated, Nextep branded, USB dongle, or supported on laptop embedded SIM and HSPA modem, and as such would not be made available for multiple users via a 3G wireless gateway. "The services is restricted to a single laptop: you'll have a username and password to log in and each dongle is locked to one PC."

NEC says the offering will form part of a broader push into the services space, complementing its Applications Net SaaS offering announced last year. Applications Net is billed as "a supermarket of hosted business applications, delivering all the tools a business needs to run from the cloud, completely integrated with a single monthly bill.

Wallace said: "NEC Applications Net has a real breadth of offerings spanning everything from email, voice, unified communications, CRM, HR, Payroll and beyond. When you add in the ability to access all this cost effectively and securely from a remote location, it's now possible to run your entire business from a single laptop or run a virtual office with staff across the whole of Australia."

Neatnica said: "We have a launched this to a limited number of channel partners who sell predominantly private network services. We will let it run for a while and later on start bundling in applications like preloaded email, business applications like CRM, and a SIP softphone.
