The Government has offered Australia's three mobile operators, and vividwireless, renewal of their existing spectrum allocated on 15 year licences in the late 90s and early 2000s at set prices, while the Government expects to rake in $3 billion.
CitiPower and Powercor Australia have chosen US based Silver Spring Networks to provide the network to support the rollout of a government-mandated Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) expected to network approximately 1.2 million homes and businesses throughout Victoria by 2013.
Silver Spring says its network will support "unlimited advanced applications, including smart metering, demand response, distribution automation and distributed generation, over a single, unified network."
It adds that its Smart Energy Network "is based on open, Internet Protocol (IP) standards, allowing continuous, two-way communication between the utility and every device on the grid."
The company has deployments with major utilities in the US and elsewhere including Florida Power & Light, Pacific Gas & Electric, Pepco Holdings, Jemena Electricity Networks and United Energy Distribution.
