Optus grew its mobile customer base by 156,000 in the three months to 31 March, according to figures released by its parent SingTel ahead of SingTel's Q4 and full year results announcement on Thursday 14 May.
Growth over the full year was 652,000 or 9.1 percent. The Q1 growth included 105,000 postpaid customers, driven, according to SingTel, by "continuing strong demand for innovative offers including iPhone 3G, 'Timeless' unlimited plans and wireless broadband." The number of 3G subscribers increased to 2.58 million during the quarter.
The most recent figures from the other carriers are for end 2008. At 31 December 2008 Telstra had 9.706m mobile customers up from 9.335m six months earlier and from 9.319m a year earlier - a full year growth of 4.2 percent. Vodafone added 186,000 customers in the three months to 31 December 2008 taking its total to 3.915m, but half of those (76,300) came with the acquisition of reseller Crazy Johns. A year earlier Vodafone had 3.572m customers, so achieved a full year growth of 9.6 percent.
Greatest growth in percentage terms was achieved by Hutchison, the operator with the smallest subsriber base. It reported a 29.0 percent increase for the year to 31 December 2008 taking its total to 2.036m, 90.6 percent of them post paid.
