Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
The ABC has been allocated $15.3 million over three years to in the Federal Budget to expand its Local Regional Broadband Hubs to "encourage and assist the development of user generated content and create online avenues for local communities to connect and collaborate."
The ABC will establish community websites and portals, and create 'virtual town squares' for communities to share experiences.
Communications minister Stephen Conroy said the new funding would result in more than 50 enhanced regional broadband hubs over the next three years. Funding will be used to identify and employ local producers to work on cross-media stories and to train audiences to create their own content.
"The expanded interactive sites will build awareness of local issues and stimulate and facilitate community-generated content. They will be supported by education, training and equipment to enable local communities to generate and publish their own content," Conroy said.
There is, however, already a private sector initiative from a broadcaster that aims to achieve similar goals. In September 2007 Prime Television launched a subsidiary iPRIME to launch Internet portals specific to each of the regional communities it serves and strong cross ties between online and broadcast content. Its web site now indicates it is serving 30 communities.
