Advertising funded hotspot rollout for Chicago

IT Industry - Strategy

Tantus Networks has announced plans to roll out more than 500 free hotspots throughout downtown Chicago and surrounding areas and to generate revenue from advertising.

The possibility of Google rolling out a ubiquitous WiFi network in San Francisco, offering free access and generating revenue from advertising has been greeted as a potential major threat to the local advertising industry, and a model which could be repeated just about anywhere in the world.

Tantus' plans suggest that Google is not alone in believing this to be a viable business model. Tantus says revenue will come from "targeted advertising from strategic Tantus partners, and from local businesses," and that it expects more than 20,000 users each day.

"The service is going to be very community-oriented, allowing host venues to market their own products and services, while attracting more visitors, who will stay longer, to their locations," said Tantus president, David Wieland.
