Telarus to offer Optus 3G data services & virtual hosting

IT Industry - Strategy

Privately owned telco Telarus is planning to offer mobile data services based on the Optus 3G network and to offer virtualised hosting services. It is also expanding its channel programmes.

CEO Jules Rumsey told ITWire that both the mobile data service and the virtualisation service should be launched by late March or early April.

He explained that the Optus 3G-based service would not be simple resale. "We have a circuit between us and them that will provide a conduit between us and Optus for terminating 3G data services that will be a big differentiator in terms of what we can offer. Rather than just connect people to the Internet we will be able to connect an individual 3G data session to a VPN direct into a corporate data centre."

He added that, "Bigger companies that are particularly security conscious may still want to run IPSec over the top but we are working on some solutions using our managed firewall that will be a particularly attractive to them."

For its upcoming virtual hosting service, Telarus already has one customer, digital signage provider Comneuvo, but Rumsey said the service would be formally launched through channel partners, probably late in March. "We have had the production platform in place for some time...We have an IBM blade server and we have signed up for VMware's service provider licence which allows us to lease licences to clients on a monthly recurring basis. It makes it pretty affordable: we don't have to pay until we get clients and the clients don't have to pay until the start using it and they can scale the number of licences up and down as their needs change."
