The Government has offered Australia's three mobile operators, and vividwireless, renewal of their existing spectrum allocated on 15 year licences in the late 90s and early 2000s at set prices, while the Government expects to rake in $3 billion.
Optus’s Mulder continues: “The service will have two video news bulletins across the tournament, covering the day and night sessions so customers can catch up on the wins and losses and shots of the day as they travel to and from work or during their lunch break.
“We are proud to continue our support of the Australian Open in 2009 as official partner and official telecommunications provider for the fifth consecutive year.
“This partnership has enabled us to launch this exciting service exclusively for our mobile
customers so they can experience prime tennis coverage in the palm of their hand, in real time.
“We are delighted to be working with Seven to extend coverage of one of the biggest events this summer to our customers,” Mr Mulder said.
Kurt Burnette, Seven Network Director Of Sales said, “We are extremely pleased to have the
continued support from Optus as a network broadcast partner and look forward to working with them to ensure a very successful summer involving a campaign first - the streaming of Seven’s Australian Open Tennis coverage live to Optus mobile.”
Well, Messers Mulder and Burnette, as I noted – let’s hope the video quality is up to standard, otherwise we’re just going to be watching blurry pictures during the action parts of playing tennis, with a live audio stream of what’s happening on Channel Seven…
Were I an Optus subscriber, I’d try it out, but as I’m not, perhaps Optus subscribers out there can tell us what the quality is like.
To try it out, you can visit “Optus Zoo” on your phone, and then click on the Sport icon. You can also click SMS ‘Tennis’ to 966 to subscribe.
Optus Pre-Paid mobile customers will be charged a 22c flagfall to click the link in the reply message and per data session.
Optus notes that its customers can “enjoy the Australian Open Scoreboard, player profiles, video highlights and games via the online site at www.australianopen.optus.com.au”.
