It's not Quigley: former BT boss Ben Verwaayen to head Alcatel-Lucent

IT Industry - Strategy

Instead he was given the new role of president, science technology and strategy where he would "devote his attention to assuring that strategic investments align with evolving market opportunities." An Alcatel spokeswoman said at the time that he had decided to spend more time with his family, "of whom he hasn't seen much lately as he has been flying constantly between Paris and Dallas."

However Alcatel was none too keen to trumpet the appointment of one of its most senior executives to this supposedly strategic role in the merged company. Details of his change of role were buried at the bottom of a lengthy joint statement with Lucent announcing progress in the merger and a number of additional appointments.

He held the job only until August 2007 when he quit and returned to Australia. Russo described his departure as part of the evolution of the new company. "When we announced the merger of Alcatel-Lucent we acknowledged the breadth and depth of the senior management team and we anticipated that there would be an evolution in leadership responsibilities, which is natural."

In a statement announcing the new appointments Alcatel-Lucent said: "Philippe Camus and Ben Verwaayen are respected and experienced business leaders. Their understanding of this industry with its challenges and opportunities make them the perfect choice to lead and guide Alcatel-Lucent as it moves into this next stage in its development," said "Philippe Camus has experience in several high-tech global industries, including the fast-growing media sector, as well as in managing multi-cultural environment. Ben Verwaayen's years of experience in this industry have given him great insight into Alcatel-Lucent. He also has deep understanding of the industry trends and customer needs and is fully committed to innovation, technological excellence and unsurpassed customer service."
