Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
CSIRO subsidiary Funnelback is providing an outsourced search functionality to Telstra's revamped Web 2.0 based Nowwearetalking web site, launched earlier this week.
Search on the site covers content contained in forums, blogs and online discussions as well as user stories and questions. The Funnelback technology is deployed as a fully outsourced solution, managed by "the Funnelback team of search experts," according to Funnelback.
CEO Brett Matson said: "Funnelback's context aware ranking algorithm enables the search engine to target the correct results because it's tuned to the specific structure and content of the Telstra web-site. The Funnelback categorisation feature also allows users to navigate through the search results to find the content they're looking for."
Funnelback claims that its search engine has "a world class result ranking algorithm at its core, which can be tuned to the specific information retrieval needs of its clients." It says this core technology is used by a number large Australian organisations including the Federal Government, Westpac Banking Corporation, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the Australian Securities Exchange, ninemsn and a third or all Australian universities.
The Funnelback search engine originated as a research project (originally called P@noptic) in 1998, by information retrieval expert Dr David Hawking in a joint venture between the CSIRO ICT Centre and the Australian National University. Even as a non-commercial research project a demand developed for the search engine and it was installed in a number of large Australian corporations.
The name Funnelback is a play on the name of two spiders – the Funnel-web and the Redback. It was chosen because a core component of the Funnelback search engine is a web spider and Funnelback's ability to rapidly funnel relevant information back to the user.
