The Government has offered Australia's three mobile operators, and vividwireless, renewal of their existing spectrum allocated on 15 year licences in the late 90s and early 2000s at set prices, while the Government expects to rake in $3 billion.
The number is being launched by Telstra Country Wide Group MD Mr Geoff Booth, who said that “the Hotline would give the small number of customers experiencing genuine problems a direct line to a specialist call centre where trained consultants would take them through tried-and-tested diagnostic steps to help locate the cause of their issue and where necessary arrange a physical test of coverage at their location. If the diagnostics show there is a genuine handset problem, Telstra will swap out a customer’s handset.”
Booth said that the launch of the 1800 number “extends the unprecedented measures that Telstra has put in place both before and after purchase to help customers get the handset and accessories that best meet their requirements”.
He also explained that: “Our experience shows that we can easily fix the vast majority of customer issues on the spot. In many cases it is simply a case of making sure the phone has the right SIM card, the right settings or the right accessories – such as using an external aerial”, and continued that “I want to stress that all handsets that Telstra sells, for use on any of our networks, have passed rigorous testing, meet established international performance standards, and provide coverage within mapped coverage areas”.
As previously reported, Telstra says it has also “put in place a number of other programs to make it easier for customers to make the move from the old CDMA network, including putting extra staff on the road to demonstrate coverage equivalence and monitoring drop out rates, in an effort to proactively identify and assist customers who may be having handset issues”.
CDMA will soon be the 'closed down mobile architecture' - so if you're still yet to make the switch, now's the time to check your coverage compared with Next G - and if you're having issues, call Telstra now - not on the 28th of April, 2008.
