Fujitsu picks Adelaide for applications centre

IT Industry - Strategy

Formally opened today, Fujitsu's application solution centre in Adelaide will employ 200 people within two years, according to company officials.

The idea is to provide Australian organisations with a "low risk" alternative to offshoring their outsourced application development and maintenance activities. When customers do pick the offshore alternative, the Adelaide centre can manage projects handled by the company's India and Philippines facilities.

"This Centre represents a major investment by Fujitsu in developing and expanding our domestic capabilities," said Jean-Pierre Deruddere, Fujitsu's executive general manager, enterprise application services.

"Our operation in Adelaide has a proven track record in delivering quality application services from a solid base of outstanding local expertise in software design, development, maintenance and support. By focusing additional resources to expand this facility, we will be able to offer higher levels of competency and greater economies of scale to meet our business and government clients' needs for quality application services at a lower price."

Among the reasons for choosing Adelaide were the substantial local talent pool, including a stream of new graduates from the four local universities.

State premier Mike Rann welcomed the centre, saying "We are proud to have the opportunity to partner with Fujitsu not only to keep these jobs in Australia, but also to expand our local skills."
