Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
Paris-based Musiwave provides polyphonic and monophonic ringtones, video ringtones and other video content, ring back tones (audio content that replaces the conventional ring tone), an over-the-air music sales system, Music Wizard (a music recognition service that links to track and ringtone sales systems), and Smart Radio (an over-the-air music streaming service that learns and adapts to listener preferences).
Its customers are mobile phone operators and music companies.
"Musiwave would bring key assets to us as we continue to bring our vision of Connected Entertainment to life," said J Allard, corporate vice president in charge of music at Microsoft.
"Its software expertise and extensive relationships with operators and music companies would help us take our products and services to the next level, giving people access to whatever entertainment content they want, whenever and however they want it."
Microsoft intends to combine Musiwave's technologies with products and services including Windows Mobile, Zune, MSN and Windows Live.
"Microsoft and Musiwave share the same philosophy in working with hardware and mobile operator partners to deliver great experiences for mobile device users," said Pieter Knook, senior vice president of Microsoft's mobile communications business.
"Bringing Musiwave on board would provide an opportunity for Microsoft to explore new areas in the mobile space previously untapped, and to showcase the power of software plus services. This contemplated acquisition reflects Microsoft's recognition of the software and technology expertise in Europe."
Microsoft currently has an exclusivity agreement protecting its interest in Musiwave.
