VMware acquires automation software developer

IT Industry - Strategy

VMware has acquired Dunes Technologies, a developer of process orchestration software for virtual environments.

"Dunes has developed a powerful orchestration platform that will allow us to automate the entire virtual machine lifecycle from requisition to de-commissioning, while complementing existing VMware management and automation solutions such as VMware Lab Manager and the recently announced VMware Virtual Desktop Manager," said Raghu Raghuram, vice president of products and solutions at VMware.

One of the benefits of virtualisation is that it allows the number of virtual servers dedicated to a particular application or group of applications to be varied according to demand. Dunes' software allows the creation of workflows and policies to control this and other aspects of server commissioning, including disaster recovery.

Automating such processes improves reliability by reducing the opportunity for error, and helps ensure compliance with policies.

Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.
