Microsoft simplifies hardware licensing

IT Industry - Strategy

Changes to Microsoft's hardware intellectual property licensing program allow contract manufacturers and outsourced design and manufacturing firms to take out a single IP licence to cover the work they do for multiple clients.

Previously, each 'end brand' was required to obtain a separate licence from Microsoft. The new arrangements mean companies selling peripherals can leave the details of licensing to their chosen manufacturing partners.

Technologies covered by the program include U2 (autosensing USB/PS2 peripheral interface), tilt wheel and magnifier.

"Microsoft Hardware is at the forefront of innovation in this category and cooperates with licensees in the industry who share the same respect for IP and the value it brings to their customers," said Rusty Jeffress, general manager of Microsoft Hardware.
