Microsoft puts Silverlight in spotlight at MIX07

IT Industry - Strategy

Microsoft took its answer to Adobe's Flash technology, Silverlight, to the development community yesterday, with chief architect Ray Ozzie waxing lyrical about the new browser-based software at the company's annual MIX conference for developers.

Aimed squarely at the Flash market, Microsoft's new Silverlight technology, at beta version 1.0, is now available for download as a compatible plug-in for Internet Explorer, Firefox and Apple Safari. The technology enables the development of .NET based media and interactive applications for the web and it comes at a time when Adobe is taking its Flash technology to the desktop.

In addition to the Silverlight download, Microsoft announced support for dynamic languages including Python and Ruby, and the next edition of Visual Studio, code-named "Orcas," for building Silverlight applications.

Microsoft's Ozzie played up the importance of having a development platform that would span the web, the PC desktop and mobile devices.

"Silverlight is an important aspect of our software-plus-services strategy focused on delivering great user experiences that span the Web, the PC and mobile devices," said Ozzie. "It does so, in part, by bridging technical barriers that previously made it difficult for Web developers and designers to collaborate. As a result, Silverlight will play an important role in helping advance the Web with a platform for creating rich, interactive experiences."

At the MIX07 conference Microsft also trotted out its star beta testers for Silverlight, including CBS and video solutions developer Metaliq.
