IBM, Oracle and others join 'service science' initiative

IT Industry - Strategy

The Service Research and Innovation Initiative - backed by IBM, Oracle and other major tech companies as well as some leading institutions - aims to promote 'service science.'

Service science - which draws on computing, social sciences, engineering and management - targets improved productivity and the more rapid development of new service offerings.

In turn, the SRII's goal is to increase spending on services research and development, especially to find ways of continually improving IT services offerings - just as the hardware industry churns out improved products each year.

SRII corporate members include Accenture, Cisco, Computer Sciences, EMC, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle and Xerox.

Academic support comes from Arizona State University, the University of California Los Angleles, and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

According to Jim Spohrer, director, service research at IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California, service science is already being taught in 39 programs at universities in 22 countries.

SRII is not an all-US affair: the European Commission and the Fraunhofer Institute (best known for its MP3 patents) are also members.

The initiative is also backed by the Technology Professional Services Association (TPSA) and the Service and Support Professionals Association (SSPA)

The new group's first symposium will be held in Santa Clara, California on 30 May.
