Apple runs iPhone teaser ad during Oscars broadcast

IT Industry - Market

Apple took advantage of the massive TV audience for the Academy Awards ceremony to run a teaser ad for its forthcoming iPhone.

The ad contains a host of clips from movies and TV shows with many famous faces - mostly real, but a few animated - answering the phone. It closes with a shot of the iPhone and the text "Coming in June".

No details about the device appeared in the ad.

According to the Los Angeles Times, each 30-second spot during the broadcast cost advertisers $US1.7 million. Around 39 million people tuned in for the 2006 ceremony.

The same report notes that the event is known as the "Super Bowl for Women" because of the huge female audience it attracts. Apple's '1984' commercial  produced by Ridley Scott for the Macintosh's debut was only broadcast during the Super Bowl.

The iPhone ad can be seen at Apple's web site.
