Internet users in the Asia Pacific region, including Australia and New Zealand, last year generated around 67,000 petabytes of Internet traffic and forecasts now predict that over the next five years traffic will soar to almost 530,000pb, with China and India easily the biggest traffic generators.
In its latest market report, Informa says that the traffic volumes in 2010 meant that APAC Internet users, on average, generated 7.1GB of traffic per month in last year, and that is expected to rise to 31.2GB in 2015.
'Traffic in Asia Pacific is very much a tale of two regions. Developed Asia Pacific, which Informa defines as Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand, features countries with some of the fastest broadband infrastructure in the world,' Giles Cottle, Informa Telecoms & Media principal analyst said.
'The rest of the region is much less developed in terms of infrastructure but, principally down to China and India, will be a huge contributor to traffic because of the sheer number of Internet users in the region.'
According to Giles, Asia Pacific is already the largest region for Internet traffic and he said that by 2015 it will account for 42 percent of the world's Internet traffic. 'Asia Pacific Developing in its own right will be the second biggest region, after North America, in 2015. Informa expects it to overtake the US in 2016.'
Leveraging on the strength and establishment of the CDN World Summit, Informa announced that is now launching CDN Asia, which it says will be a highly targeted event focusing on CDN developments and expansion across Asia and will 'bring together under one roof top executives from leading operators and content providers from across this high growth continent such as Telstra, Tata Communications, MTV, Pacnet, Korea Telecom, PlayJam, VNPT and many more.'
The CDN World Summit will be held in Hong Kong on 7 and 8 February next year.
