Laser MFD sales slip in 4Q10

IT Industry - Market

IDC has a mixed message for printer manufacturers. There's good and bad news in the laser multifunction device segment.

While year-on-year growth in the laser MFD (multifunction device) market was a respectable 9% in 4Q10, the figures represent a 17% drop on the previous quarter, according to IDC figures.

Cheryl Looi, hardcopy peripherals analyst for IDC Australia, explained this was a result of heavy pricing rebates in 3Q10 leading to excess channel inventory, followed by a drop in business confidence in 4Q10 having a negative effect on sales.

Several manufacturers - including Brother, Dell, Fuji Xerox, and Oki - have expanded their product lineups to attract SMB customers.

"Aggressive price competition and more product refreshes will be expected in coming quarters, as copier vendors attempt to increase market presence in the growing SMB segment, ultimately benefiting end users," predicted Ms Looi.

IDC's market share figures for the top six printer-based laser MFD vendors are Brother 32%, Samsung 25%, HP 22%, Fuji Xerox 6%, Lexmark 6% and Canon 3%.
