IT Industry -
Market
The worldwide datacentre infrastructure market, like the IT industry generally, has rebounded from the downturn caused by the global financial crisis, with more new datacentres now being built and old datacentres being retrofitted with new, more efficient infrastructure.
IDC's latest survey of the market found that the datacentre infrastructure market had gained ground in the second quarter of this year, with revenue growth approaching seven percent, and with power distribution units (PDUs), uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), cooling, and racks making a significant rebound in the quarter, while revenues and shipments expanded 6.9% and 3.6%, respectively, over the first quarter.
According to IDC, datacentre infrastructure revenues fought back losses and were down just 1.8% while shipments were up 2.6% year over year.
On the vendor side, IDC reports that Emerson Network Power and Liebert led the datacentre cooling market, combining for 47.9% of revenues in 2Q10, and despite losing 3.3% of its revenue share quarter over quarter, APC by Schneider Electric remained the leader in the datacentre power distribution units (PDU) market in the quarter with 29.1% of the market.
In the datacentre rack market, IDC says that HP outpaced its nearest competitor, Emerson, with 22.5% of revenues, while in the datacentre uninterruptible power supply (UPS) market, Eaton's share was up 0.8% quarter over the quarter, and the company led the market with 30.2% of revenue.
According to IDC senior research infrastructure analyst, Katherine Broderick, the rebound of the datacentre infrastructure market in the second quarter reflects the 'overall IT recovery from the Great Recession,' and she adds, 'IDC attributes much of this datacentre growth to wholesale datacentre providers and hosters."
