ACS unveils stellar line up for World Computer Congress

IT Industry - Market

The Australian Computer Society, which will host the 21st World Computer Congress in Brisbane in September, has unveiled a stellar line up of speakers for the event including author and opinion-shaper Nicholas Carr, the UK Government’s CIO John Suffolk and Richard Stallman, founder of the Free Software Movement.

Held every two years, the WCC will run in Brisbane from 20-23 September, and is expected to provide a glimpse of how technology will impact both economies and society over the coming years. The ACS has slated a total of 300 speakers and predicts up to 1,500 people will attend the four day event which is the major conference on the calendar of the International Federation for Information Processing.

In a release issued today WCC Chair, Nick Tate, explained the timing was perfect; “With Australia more than 12 months into an eight year build of our largest infrastructure project, the National Broadband Network, it is important that we focus on technology to spur our next step of evolution and strengthen our international competitiveness.

“We are moving towards establishing a digital economy and that will impact on everyone in our community from SMEs to corporates, mums and dads and our children.” By September, when the WCC kicks off, the outcome of the federal election will be known and Tate may have to eat his words if the Coalition is elected, and Tony Abbott proceeds with his plans to axe the NBN.

A total of eight streams has been scheduled for the four day event, with international keynote speakers peppered throughout the event. Local CIOs lined up to speak include Woolworths CIO Dan Beecham, Nick Brandt, Brisbane City Council CIO and Baden Sharples, CIO for QSuper.

Australian Government CIOs will no doubt be particularly keen to hear from the UK CIO John Suffolk whose office has been charged with exploring how the UK Government can exploit opportunities in cloud computing. Meanwhile the most intriguing business card to collect at the event will be that issued by John Passfield, listed as the “chief creative bloke” at social gaming company 3 Blokes Studios.
