Vic Government survey suggests strong demand for NBN

IT Industry - Market

A Victorian Government commissioned study says almost 220,000 Victorian households, 13 percent of the market would take up NBN services as soon as they become available.

The study, by Access Economics also estimates that, on the expected NBN rollout schedule this number will be 300,000 by 2015.

It also says that, if the NBN does not go ahead but is replaced by more conservative expansions of faster bandwidth services, the communications market in Victoria will be some $400m or three percent less in value by 1015 than with an NBN rollout.

The report 'Telecommunications Spend and Demand in Victoria' estimates total telecommunications expenditure in the state for 2009/2010 at $10.8b, 56 percent consumer and 44 percent enterprise and business. The greater Melbourne metropolitan area accounts for 75 percent of the total.

Releasing the report, Victoria's information and communication technology minister, John Lenders, said: "Victoria's appetite for high-quality broadband continues to exceed market supply with over half a million households and businesses aspiring for greater speeds than what they can currently get.

"The report estimated that in December more than 219,000 households and businesses would take up an NBN grade service if it was offered - about 13 percent of the current market - with this demand expected to grow to about 50 percent of the market in just three years."
