Optus reports biggest mobile growth in five years

Optus added a quarter of a million new mobile subscribers in the three months to 31 March, its strongest quarterly growth in five years.

The surge took total subscriber numbers to 8.498 million, up 709,000 from 7.789 million 12 months ago. In the last quarter, to 31 December Optus' growth figures were reduced because it culled 272,000 dormant prepaid accounts.

Optus says postpaid as percentage of total grew: it added 596,000 new postpaid customers in the 12 months, an increase of 17 percent year-on-year, taking postpaids to 49 percent of  total mobile base,  three percent more than a year ago.

Optus' 3G mobile customer base grew to 3.61 million, a 7.8 percent increase from the preceding quarter.

SingTel will reveal more details of Optus' performance in mobile and other areas of its business when it releases its Q4 results tomorrow, 13 May.
