CIO confidence; a dead cat bounce?

At a time when banks are shedding IT roles by the dozen, it seems counter-intuitive that 83 per cent of the nation’s chief information officers should report they are confident about the future of their business to the extent that 45 per cent expect to hire IT staff in the first six months of the year. The question remains – is this a dead cat bounce?

Your average broadband user: 11.4Gbytes per month

IT Industry - Market

According to data from Cisco, the average broadband connection, across the globe, now generates 11.4Gbytes of Internet traffic per month.

However the spread of usage across subscribers is far from even. The top one percent of global subscribers generated more than 20 percent of all traffic and the top 10 percent more than 60 percent of all traffic.

In an average day, Internet 'Prime time' runs from approximately 9 pm to 1 am around the world and 25 percent of global Internet traffic is generated during this peak period. This, Cisco says, contrasts with broadcast TV prime time, which is generally from 7 pm to 11 pm across most global markets.

"Globally, the average broadband connection consumes about 4.3 gigabytes of visual networking applications (advanced services such as video, social networking and collaboration) traffic per month," according to Cisco. "Per connection per day, this amount is roughly the equivalent of approximately 20.5 short- form Internet videos or approximately 1.1 hours of Internet video, whether streamed on its own, embedded in a Web page, or viewed as part of video communications."

Cisco says the findings come from a cooperative programme between it and a group of more than 20 service providers - representing the mobile, wireline, and cable segments throughout North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific and various emerging markets - "who share their anonymous, aggregated network usage data to help them analyse network usage trends, anticipate infrastructure changes, and develop future architectural guidelines."

Growth of Internet traffic is, of course very much in Cisco's interest as it drives demand for its major products - core network routers and switches, and Cisco is doing much do try and drive demand for video among consumers, for example with its purchase of Pure Digital, makers of the Flip HD video camera, which Cisco is due to formally launch in Australia on October 29.
