Deduplication - especially for email and backup - is another technology that can significantly reduce storage requirements.
According to Professor Susan Williams of the University of Sydney's Faculty of Economics and Business, part of the problem lies not merely in the growing volume of data, but its growing complexity.
Avoiding or removing unnecessary duplication is one thing, but "I really think the focus os on the information itself, not the technology," she said.
Historically, companies have not focused on managing information (especially unstructured information), though they have been generally good with managing data.
So they need to develop their information management capability, including appropriate policies and strategies, Williams said.
She suggests organisations should turn to their records management staff - if they haven't already got rid of them. Failing that, some of the professional services companies are addressing information management issues.
The role requires someone with skills in traditional information management as well as in digital information design.
