"I'm not sure that [Australian and New Zealand organisations] have really woken up to the fact that they have an information glut," he said.

Storage virtualisation is also important, as it helps break down information silos as well as helping with thin (or dynamic) provisioning, which can significantly reduce the amount of unused storage. According to Smith, a large majority of organisations already have enough storage to meet their expected needs for at least the next year. Since storage costs continue to fall, he said this is "a waste of money."
