IBM puts business desktop in the cloud

IT Industry - Market

There are plenty of business applications available in the cloud, but now IBM is offering a complete desktop service. The IBM Smart Business Desktop incorporates components from multiple developers.

IBM's Smart Business Desktop provides a centrally-managed desktop to connected PCs and certain other devices. A web browser and Java are required.

Built on the IBM Cloud subscription service, the Smart Business Desktop incorporates components from Citrix, Desktone, VMware and Wyse, as well as tools and software from IBM.

Advantages are said to include no upfront costs, along with enhanced security, resiliency, reliability and quality.

"Today more than ever, enterprises need an affordable, reliable and efficient way to deploy and manage desktop infrastructures," said Jan Jackman, vice president, end user services, IBM Global Technology Services.

"The public desktop cloud service is designed to help bring cost savings, flexibility, scalability and security to clients like never before," added Jackman.

As well as the standard cloud delivery, the service is also offered on dedicated hardware or as an on-premises implementation.

The Smart Business Desktop will be available from October 2009, beginning in North America and Europe.
