Less paper, less costs with new ATM technology

IT Industry - Market

New Zealand  banking  group, BNZ, is set to deploy NCR ATM’s which use printing technology that NCR claims reduces paper consumption by as much as 45 percent, with printing on both sides of a thermal paper receipt.

NCR says BNZ will deploy its selfserve ATMs equipped with combined dual-roll thermal printing technology, and which the bank says will help to reduce the operational costs of its ATM network.

BNZ will deploy the 2ST technology on more than 36 of its NCR SelfServ ATMs.

Paul Johnson, channel manager ATM at BNZ, says the NCR ATM solutions will help the bank to reduce the operational costs of its ATM network “while providing our customers with a premium experience.”

“Our ATM channel is an important part of our brand, as our customers and prospective customers rely heavily on our ATMs.  NCR’s solution will help us deliver a positive user experience while helping us manage costs in this economic environment.”

NCR says that, with the increased printing space available on 2ST receipts, BNZ will be able to improve its one-to-one customer marketing, communicating with existing and prospective customers with additional offerings from the bank.

According to NCR’s managing director Australia and New Zealand, Ross Checkley  “a financial institution’s self-service network – especially its ATM channel – is the public face of its brand,” and, he adds,  “a premium ATM experience enables customers to not only carry out the transactions they want, when they want to do them, but also to exceed their expectations.”

“Over half of ATM downtime is due to low-level maintenance tasks – often performed by branch staff – such as replacing receipt rolls and clearing cards or paper jams,” says Checkley, but, he claims that with interactive full motion video, NCR SelfServ will “allow BNZ’s staff to fix more faults the first time and do so more quickly, leading to better availability.

“Beyond reducing the total consumption of paper by printing on both sides of the receipt, NCR SelfServ’s dual-roll receipt modules include auto-change functionality to reduce paper wastage and maintenance costs through fewer replenishment visits.”

Checkley says the SelfServ ATMs also feature “self-healing” capabilities that automatically recover from soft failures without intervention, reducing recovery time from three to four hours to just ten to 15 minutes.
