British IT workers drink a lot

IT Industry - Market

According to a new study from the UK's Department of Health, IT workers are second only to media professionals in their consumption of alcohol.

The findings came from a poll of 1,400 workers across several fields.

At the sensible end of the drinking spectrum lay teachers, who pay the most attention to how much they drink.

Half the respondents from the field of education said they monitored their drinking.

On average, teachers consume 24 units of alcohol per week, within the Department's guidelines for men (21 to 28 units per week) and a little higher than the guidelines for women (14 to 21 units).

A unit of alcohol is defined by the Department as 10 milligrams of straight alcohol. That works out to about two units in a pint of beer, three in a large glass of wine, and two and a half in a stiff cocktail.

Second most responsible, after teachers, were drivers and others in the transportation sector.
