Comms industry put on notice over premium mobile shonks

IT Industry - Market

"Finally, the ACCC proposed that all consumers should be given the option of completely barring premium services from their mobile number. The ACCC argued that this would more effectively stop the provision and billing of mobile premium services without the consent of mobile phone customers. The ACCC is now saying to the members of the Communications Alliance, 'get this Code finalised, it has been too long coming'."

He warned that "In the event that the Industry does not adequately address the consumer issues that the ACCC has observed, either through the Code or otherwise, more active intervention may be required."

Communications Alliance was quick to respond to Samuel's comments. CEO Anne Hurley issued a statement saying the industry was committed to implementing rules and taking action to stop rogue operators taking advantage of customers. "The Australian communications industry is eager to implement and enforce rules and other protections to stop its reputation being tarnished by deceptive operators."

She praised the new code as being "a terrific example of our members' responsiveness to community issues and the industry's ability to work collaboratively with government and consumers," said it would "soon be registered with the ACMA," and that it would "tighten obligations on advertising for subscription services."

She claimed that, "rather than wait for the finalisation of the Code, the industry has already begun observing these rules and enforcing them through contractual arrangements."
