Huawei unveils inscrutable non-working Android smartphone

IT Industry - Market

Chinese telecoms heavyweight Huawei Technologies has unveiled its first Android smartphone at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The smartphone, one of a growing number slated to be powered by Google's open source Android operating system, will be commercially available in the third quarter of 2009.

The phone on display seems a bit of an anticlimax since it was not a working model and it looked like yet another attempt to copy the iPhone design, looking to be a thin practically all-screen device with single button down the bottom.

According to Huawei, the company partnered with an established design consultancy to develop a robust and user-friendly interface, creating a powerful customer experience that is able to evolve with operators’ differentiation requirements.

And that appears to be the extent of the knowledge about the new Huawei device, which suggests that the Chinese telecoms vendor is playing at being inscrutable and intends to shroud its upcoming product in mystery ala the days before Macworld 2007.

“Huawei is delighted to showcase its much anticipated first Android-powered smartphone. As a terminal solutions provider with all-round capabilities, Huawei has an acute insight into the drivers of the communications industry and in-depth understanding of operators,” said James Chen, Director of Huawei Terminal Marketing Department.

“As a pioneer in mobile broadband devices, we look forward to expanding a compelling mobile communications experience for end-users whilst providing customised services to our operator partners via the Android smartphone.”
