Microsoft pushes Windows Mobile 6.5 at Mobile World Congress

IT Industry - Market

Microsoft's having a busy time at Mobile World Congress 2009, showcasing phones from LG and HTC that run Windows Mobile 6.5 and plugging associated software and services.

Claims made for Windows Mobile 6.5 include a new dashboard-style home screen, improved touchscreen operation, and a better web browser.

Perhaps the most broadly useful announcement was My Phone. This free service will provide online synchronisation and backup of phone data including contacts, appointments and text messages.

Not only does this secure access to the data in the event that a phone is lost or stolen, it also makes it easy to switch to a new handset - as long as it too is based on Windows Mobile.

Users will also be able to upload photos and video from the phone to My Phone.

My Phone is currently undergoing invitation-only beta testing.
