NEC takes aim at the top end enterprise unified comms market

IT Industry - Market

NEC claims to have the largest market share of the high end legacy PBX market in Australia but until the release of its Univerge SV8500 has not had a comprehensive option to transition these customers to the world of IP and unified communications.

The SV8500 is the latest model in NEC's Univerge range that debuted in Australia with the low end SV8100 last July.   It is capable of supporting up to 192,000 IP extensions. According to Steve Woff, UC business manager, NEC Australia, it can replace the central processor of a NEC's high end legacy IMX and ICS systems, some dating back 15 years, without customers needing to immediately change any of the peripheral components. "They can start off with the system pretty much unchanged and then add UC features when they are ready, he said.

According to Woff, NEC has the largest share of the high end enterprise PABX market in Australia with a market share percentage "in the high twenties". He said that about 50 percent of these customers had some IP telephony but the rest were still entirely TDM based.

NEC claims that the SV8500 is "the most cost effective highly scalable communications server on the market today," and uses 23 percent less power than previous IP servers." According to Woff, multiple SV8000 units can be installed at different sites and centrally managed as single unit.

Since launching the SV8100 last July, NEC launched thd SV8300 in late 2008. Woff said the SV8100 was designed for up to 500 users and the SV8300 for up to 5000.

Last month US magazine Internet Telephony named the SV8100 and the SV8500 as a 2008 Product of the Year Award "NEC has proven they are committed to quality and excellence while addressing real needs in the marketplace," said Rich Tehrani, editor-in-chief of Internet Telephony.

NEC has named Verve Energy, the operator of five power stations in Western Australia, as an early customer to upgrade to the SV8500.
